WTF? Football: College edition
So, this year’s been crazy in college football since it started. How many people have forgotten about Michigan losing to Appalachian State?
Well, upon returning home from work last night I turned on ESPNews and saw that both No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia lost and I couldn’t believe it. I could have expected one or the other to suffer a loss — Missouri most definitely, but WVU against Pitt, c’mon — but not both. I’m a much bigger fan of the NFL, but the NCAA has been as unpredictable as ever this year and only now with the bowl season approaching are things finally going to take shape. It looks like Ohio State and LSU are going to play each other for the title, they’re the new No. 1 and No. 2. The selection show is tonigh, so we’ll know for sure then.
But how crazy has this season been Nos. 1 and 2 are falling all over the place. Even unbeaten No. 12 Hawaii almost suffered their first loss of the season yesterday to unranked Washington. I said the other week at work, I don’t want to be the favorite this year and I wouldn’t want to be ranked as high as No. 2 in the country until the championship game.
Here are some bite-sized NCAA football snacks for everyone to munch on (agree or disagree, post a comment below and let me know):
- In the championship game, I want to be No. 2. Is there any doubt that there will be an upset in the title game too?
- I still think Missouri and WVU, if Pat White’s 100 percent, would have made the most exciting championship game, we’ll have to wait to see what we get.
- I’m not waiting, Oklahoma-LSU is the best matchup out of the top 3 teams right now. Ohio State’s a poser, did anyone else see how bad the Big 10 was this year?
- Could Les Miles have announced his intention to stay in Baton Rouge, despite the advances from up north, just a month before winning a national championship with the Tigers? If they play Ohio State, they’ll win easily.
- Please don’t include USC in the BCS title conversation. They don’t belong this year.
- If I was being forced to bet — what kind of crazy world would that be? — I’d put my money on Arkansas’ Darren McFadden. The dude’s scored 16 TDs, thrown four more and has more than 2,000 total yards, including 1,700+ rushing.
- Tim Tebow should make a case against my previous statement. Anyone who throws for 3,132 with 29 TDs and still rushes for 800 more and 22 TDs, is one of the best players college football has ever seen. But he’s a QB who inherited a national-championship winning team and scheme that is now 9-3.
- Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford is already making headlines as a freshman, with 34 TDs and almost 2,900 yeards passing. He will win a championship and will be an excellent pro. The ball launches out of his hand.
- Big-time QB talk always revolves around Tebow, Chase Daniel Colt Brennan, Brian Brohm and Matt Ryan. The top passer in the nation statistically is Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell with a gaudy 5,298 yards and 45 TDs
- Central Florida’s Kevin Smith has rushed for 2,448 yards and 29 TDs, but he’s not the only Division I RB with more than 2,000 yards. Tulane’s Matt Forte has 2,127 and 23 scores.
- While I’m at droppin’ stats: Harrell’s top target, Michael Crabtree, is the top receiver with more than 1800 yards and 21 scores. Crabtree and Kansas State’s Jordy Nelson each have 120 or more catches this season.
- Finally, I’m a Notre Dame fan. This has been a long year
