2008 Baseball Predictions: Individual awards

April 2nd, 2008 by ep

Yesterday I talked about team goals, now it’s time to take a look at the individuals who I think will be the biggest difference makers in the game this year.

Without further ado, 2008’s best:

MVP

AL Sure thing: Alex Rodriguez, Yankees; Contender: Miguel Cabrera, Tigers; Longshot: B.J. Upton, Rays

- A-Rod again? What has changed in New York? Nothing, and they still have the best hitter in baseball.

NL Sure Thing: Troy Tulowitski, Rockies; Contender: David Wright, Mets; Longshot: Pat Burrell, Phillies

- Tulowitski’s the next Jeter. Pat Burrell is definitely a longshot, but he’s also an underrated cog in the Phillies lineup. He gets on base a lot now, but if he hits .300 with 35 homers and 100+ RBIs the Phils, with all their other MVP contenders, are winning the NL East.

Cy Young Awards:

AL Sure Thing: C.C. Sabathia, Indians; Contender: Erik Bedard, Mariners; Longshot: Scott Shields, Rays.

-Depating between Sabathia and Carmona, gotta go with C.C. I think the Rays are going to surprise people this year, even if they don’t make the playoffs.

NL Sure Thing: Johan Santana, Mets; Contender: Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks; Longshot: Cole Hamels, Phillies.

- Santana will clean up this year. Hamels has the benefit of a tremendous offense.

Rookie of the Year

AL Sure Thing: Daric Barton, A’s; Contender: Jacoby Ellsbury, Red Sox; Longshot: Clay Bucholz, Red Sox.

-Two Red Sox on one of my lists (shudder). But Ellsbury and Bucholz both showed what they were capable of at the end of last year.

NL Sure Thing: Joey Votto, 1B, Reds; Contender: Geovany Soto, C, Cubs; Longshot: Colby Rasmus, OF, Cardinals.

-Soto’s already got a starting spot. The Cardinals are awful, Rasmus will get the call soon enough.

Individual awards out a day late, tomorrow I’ll review my picks from last year.

[...] A — Besides Burrell and Upton, the Rays have slugger Carlos Pena, rising superstar Evan Longoria, speedster Carl Crawford and underrated shortstop Jason Bartlett. They’ll be as good as they were last year, when I said the Rays were going to surprise a lot of people in this post. [...]
