THE LIST: 5 Classic Video Games

May 20th, 2008 by ep

If you don’t remember these games fondly, you’ve never played them. These are five TheListgames that I’ll always remember dragging me into this hobby. They are by no means my favorite games or the best games of all-time, though they are in the conversation on both counts.

The original NES Legend of Zelda and the Star Wars arcade cabinet at the amusement park didn’t make the list even though I have great memories wasting time on them.

Mini review: Devil May Cry 4

May 17th, 2008 by ep

DMC4 box art Some parts actually made me want to Cry

Yeah, Devil May Cry 4 is a good game. It’s fun and controls well but there are some niggling things that really got to me.

I hate games where you get locked into a room or area by a mysterious forcefield until such time as you dispatch a set number of enemies. What kind of power do these enemies have and why are they so bad at using it? Why don’t they just put the forcefield around me so I can’t move, then kill me?

So anyhow, the enemies are big and cool. It’s fun to fight them with special powers and swords and guns. Leveling up is kind of cool. The bosses in this game are massive and extremely cool to look at, at least on my Xbox 360 it was. The first one you fight is easily defeated but a masterfully rendered piece of demon art.

What is left for Henin, Sorenstam to achieve?

May 16th, 2008 by ep

Annika Sorestam SPAt least Annika’s sticking
around until the season is over

A couple monumental retirements were announced this week, and the ramifications are huge in their respective sports. They were both shocking in that both Justine Henin and Annika Sorenstam (shown at right), are competing at an incredible level.

It seems the grind to get to that level, and the desire to move on, has helped each of them make this decision, something that should humanize these two larger than life figures to just about everyone.

THE LIST: 5 Movies I can’t not watch

May 12th, 2008 by ep

I’ll just watch this scene…

TheList This is by no means a list of the five "best movies of all time." In fact, these aren’t even my five favorite movies of all-time. These are movies that currently make their rounds on cable television. De-cussed and edited, these movies aren’t quite as good as their video releases, but for some reason when they’re on I’ve got to watch at least a scene, or until the next commercial … and sometimes the whole thing.

When is it time to cut the cord?

May 11th, 2008 by ep

sp Joey Votto I’m debating when I should decide to let go of St. Louis Cardinals outfield prospect Colby Rasmus in one of my leagues.

Every year I pick several rookies/prospects in the hopes of getting a hit. It’s part of the fun of fantasy sports in my opinion. When you pick a winner you are a genius, and luckily in fantasy baseball there’s enough talent/prospects always rotating in and out that you can find a replacement.

This season I hit big on Cincinnatti Reds 1B rookie Joey Votto (above). He’s a hit so far, anyway. I have him in several leagues. But with Rasmus it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a shot in the bigs anytime soon.

So, we’re a month into the season. Let him go or keep him? That’s a question a lot of owners are asking right now, hopefully I can shed a little light on the subject.

Gears of War 2 video

May 11th, 2008 by ep

Awesmoe, completely awesmoe

If you’ve played the first game, you probably already clicked the video to see what the second game has in store.

If you haven’t played the first game, here’s a quick, spoiler-free recap of some of the things you missed. Machine gun with a chainsaw on it for slicing and dicing, cool graphics, outstanding gameplay, not much more than an intro story, cover mechanic, over-the-shoulder shooting, interesting take on the overplayed space marine genre, different but very fun multiplayer, huge bosses, stupid Dom (you’ll get it if you play on any reasonable difficulty).

I played Gears of War I a lot and even enjoyed the multiplayer, which is saying a lot since it only had team modes.

As for the new vid, there is at least one new mechanic and a couple weapons that have me intrigued.
