Internet may ‘splode tomorrow

June 16th, 2008 by ep

In case anyone is reading this site and doesn’t know, two huge happenings on the Interwebs tomorrow.

  • Firefox 3.0 launches
  • Spore’s Creature Creator launches

Yeah, you may not care right now, but you will if all of cyberspace nukes tomorrow.

Firefox is a Web Browser, like Internet Explorer (PC) and Safari (Mac) only it works better, has more features, better security and is free to download at mozilla.com. Yes, I have used it for years and recommend it to anyone who surfs the Web. The new tabs on Internet Explorer started on Firefox. I can’t wait for the next one and Mozilla has been running a campaign to make Firefox the top one-day download in history. Servers everywhere are cringing.

That the creature creator comes out on the same day has those same servers crying. The creature creator is part of a new video game coming out later this year called Spore. It’s dubbed as the ultimate sandbox type game where you create a creature (as many arms, legs, eyes and teeth as you want to give it) and put it in a world. Over five generations of evolution your creature can, among other things, venture off to worlds feature creatures created by other players of the game. It sounds fantastical and fun.

The creature creator itself is just a part of it, allowing you to create creatures from a bazillion parts. You plop him down in the world and the creature animates. It’s not really a game, more of a game designer’s tool that is being provided to players. One of the editors at 1up.com posted on his blog about a couple creatures he created, including one that’s a sort of imagining of an imaginary creature he used to tell his child stories about and another that has eyes on the side of its body.

Just an update. I downloaded both of these programs. Firefox is a must own for anyone who can download it.
The creature creator is more of a personal preference thing. I do have to say, I was more impressed with it than I thought I would be. You create your character and can make him dance and emote. That’s it. There’s no playing to be done, but there is something mesmerizing about the whole thing.
