First Impression: Say no to Top Spin 3

July 8th, 2008 by ep

TopSpin3Cover This game would frustrate the crap out of me

After logging many frustrating hours in Top Spin 2 with a moderate level of enjoyment, it only took a few minutes of the Xbox Live demo to tell the sequel Top Spin 3 is not for me.

I got frustrated just playing the tutorial. They changed the control format, and while I could see it as a new and useful addition to tennis, it felt too precise. You don’t have a lot of leeway for hitting a shot with any sort of power. While they may be going for a more “realistic” approach here, I gotta call a balk. I can play tennis. I’ve never had lessons, am far from athletic, but still relatively good. Yes, precise is better, but tennis is not rocket surgery.

July 7th, 2008 by ep

Bungie has a serious thing for 7/7 every year,

More about Cold Storage after the break.

TopGunSP

For anybody who gleefully chuckled at that, or has a serious crush on the 80s, this news is for you: Evil Avatar just announced that the theme from Top Gun is coming to Guitar Hero III as FREE downloadable content.

Yes, that means all the Mavericks, Gooses and Icemen of the world will soon be able to rock out to the “Top Gun Anthem” in their living rooms. Unfortunately, Kelly McGillis is not included.

Aviator shades optional.

Feel free to post your favorite Top Gun quotes in the comments.

Standard 5×5 vs. something more saucy

July 1st, 2008 by ep

5x5

In the world of fantasy baseball, 5-by-5 leagues rule. All the magazines cater to the simple 5 offensive and 5 piching category leagues. In my work league, we use a different strategy and for baseball fans everywhere it can be a dream come true.

This exercise is not an endorsement of a perfect system or the total denouncement of the 5×5 — homers, runs, steals, RBIs, batting average and wins, Ks, ERA, saves, WHIP — just a suggestion to explore your other fantasy options.
