Borderlands is an absolutely great game

Posted by on 15 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: Internet, Video Games

Many of you come here looking for Halo news, and with the new Halo: Reach ViDoc release and the two Halo games that released last year, you might expect to find some Halo in this post.

Instead, let’s talk about Borderlands… and Halo. Borderlands is the first non-Halo game that has had a Halo affect on me.

After completing one playthrough with one character (there are four characters and two playthroughs for each), every day the urge to dive back in for playthrough 2 AND the beginning of an alternate character beckons.

Few games have the ability to grasp the subconscious as strongly as Borderlands does. For weeks I talked about it to friends at work and on Twitter. It is so good at what it does — pushing that little start-quest, complete-quest, get reward button in the depths of the brain. Continue Reading »

Trashed again: I had to send my Xbox 360 to rehab

Posted by on 31 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: Video Games

I’m a total Xbot.

I will be a fanboy of the Xbox 360 until the day Xbox New rises to power. Then, despite all of what I’m about to discuss, I will purchase Xbox New and 3 games on launch day.

But, that out of the way, let me tell you a little story about the piece of crap that is the Xbox 360:

The Lego "Whatever" conundrum [Xbox 360]

Video games that don’t take a lot of skill or brainpower to enjoy deserve a place in every collection, and in every console. A couple of my favorites are the Lego Star Wars games.

I played Lego Star Wars, LSW II and LSW: The Complete Collection and I had some mindless fun with every one of them. Blasting Stormtroopers until they explode into a pile of Lego pieces is fun. So is reliving the Star Wars storyline in Lego form.

With those fond memories in mind sights were set on Lego Batman, but the result was disappointment. It also raised the question why is this game disappointing? It’s not that Lego Batman is a bad game, any more than a game fan could consider all the family-focused Lego games, it’s that the fun factor wasn’t there.

Send the family away, order some pizza, Halo 3′s Mythic Map Pack available for all on April 9

Posted by on 24 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Entertainment, Internet, Video Games

Halo3 SP Yes, I am a Halo fanboy. But the greatest first person shooter on the planet is getting another map pack and it’ll be here on April 9.

Few games drew as much fanfare as Halo 3 did, and few have as many loyal followers as the epic masterpiece. Those fellows over at www.bungie.net are nice enough to keep a running log of players and matches played.

Now, remember, this game released on Sept. 25, 2007 — yes, going on two years ago — and there are still 34,000 people playing online right now, and it’s noon on a Tuesday. Bungie numbers show 696,898 unique players logged 1,430,596 matches in the last 24 hours. That’s a year-and-a-half later folks. Oh, and the UNSC campaign kill count — baddies killed by Xbox Live-enabled Halo 3 players in the single player game — is 9,777,665,269. Yep, 9.7 billion.

So, I’m not the only one rocking the Halo Underoos, and I won’t be the only one downloading these maps for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) either. The pack includes new killing venues Orbital, Assembly and Sandbox, along with skulls to collect and achievements to gain.

10 of 2008′s most playworthy games [Xbox360]

Posted by on 17 Feb 2009 | Tagged as: Entertainment, Video Games

GearsofWar2 Yes, we’re a full month-and-a-half into 2009, so this list is a little late. Luckily, there hasn’t been any game of any worth released yet this year, so you’ll have time to catch these games, and I recommend you do.

I’m no professional game reviewer, companies do not shower me with free games, nor do I complete every game purchased or rented. However, I can guarantee without a doubt, that you will find games you will love on this list. As soon as I spend my money on an overpriced PS3 or an overhyped Wii, I’ll post lists on them. For now, I stick to the less-than-reliable, but Halo-3-giving Xbox 360.

Gears of War 2: Epic, must-have

Posted by on 30 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Video Games

GearsofWar2

New enemies, weapons, modes and a better story

Gears of War 2 is one of the top 10 games on the Xbox 360, and easily one of the must-have games of this year.

The game looks great, controls even better and has a more meaty story than the first game, a masterpiece despite lacking in that department. I’ll have to review multiplayer after I’ve completed some online matches. Really, this is the only thing that could keep it from gaming Nirvana, where Halo 3 stands alone. Matchmaking, in my couple attempts, was far from responsive. I gave up before ever finding a match.
